I was asked by someone to explain what
is meant by "charging" an object in magic. That's a good question and the
ability to charge, change and clear the energetic qualities of any hard
object or substance is one of the core skills of magic work. It is also a
life skill to be able to notice "cursed objects" and how to deal with them.
Here is a short guide to how it all works.

All items have an energetic existence, carry invisible information that a
magician is sensitive to, and can work with or change.
Think of it as recording a blank CD.
To charge some water, for example, you might hold a glass or bottle of water
in your hand and charge it with a healing intention; a bracelet, necklace or
ring might be charged with good luck or protection for the wearer and so
forth.
- It is the magician using their intention to
alter the energetic reality behind the hard object.
Practise both "reading", "clearing" and "writing" the objects; for example,
visit a second hand store, a yard sale or such where used items that have a
strong imprint of previous owners, close your eyes, hover your hands over
them and get impressions of what that item is carrying by the way of
energetic information. It's truly fascinating to do this with second hand
jewellry in pawn shops and such as metals are very absorbent and people wear
their jewellry for such a long time, so the imprints are nice and strong and
clear.
The second thing is to be able to "clear" objects. Magicians routinely clear
objects, even brand new stuff bought in a shop, because components may have
been handled by unhappy/unfortunate/angry people and these negative energies
have become accidentally imprinted. This sort of thing leads to what they
call "cursed objects", things that bring bad fortune and bad luck; you can
learn to spot those easily in second hand shops. Often such objects used to
belong to a person who died of cancer or such, and that's how the cursed
object landed up in the second hand shop in the first place. But sometimes,
such cursed objects are unknowingly passed down the generations and become
family heirlooms, contaminating one generation after the other!
Objects are traditionally cleared with salt, running water, smoke and
intention. Holding your hand over the object and making sweeping,
anti-clockwise circles whilst you think/evoke/say, "I clear thee, I clear
thee, I clear thee, of all intentions save those placed by me." is a quick
and simple way to clear objects. If you feel you're not strong enough yet to
deal with a particular cursed object, you should call in someone more
experienced or if you can, get rid of it altogether by throwing it into an
ocean, a big river or at least, into the rubbish!
Finally, once an object has been cleared, you can then re-imprint it, and
that is called "charging the object", simply by holding it, focusing your
intention on the object and letting your intention and the information pour
into the object. You can seal it by passing it through an open flame three
times.
This is a very basic and very important skill in magic, so I recommend you
practise all three aspects of it regularly. You will soon notice your
awareness of the energy of the objects around you increase, and at the same
time and in step with that, your ability to clear and change the energy of
objects, and to charge objects to become agents of your desire will improve.
